After-School Special

single-channel video, 7 minutes

Modeled after the 1970's and 80's American genre by its namesake, After-School Special seeks to critique the genres incessant need to inscribe a greater moral code onto its young viewers. This narrative short exploits the stereotypical after-school special by magnifying its more humorous elements: actors that appear to be a little too old for their parts, the geeky boys vs. the hot chick set up, adolescent angst and curiosity running amuck, etc. This video takes a humorous approach to asking some pointed questions: whose morals inscribe the fabric of the after-school special? How do boy-girl role-playing antics translate into future dynamics between men and women? How much of behavior is learned and how much is instinctual?
